What Is a Snapchat Public Profile?

Published October 26, 2026 ยท Social Viewer

Most Snapchat accounts are private by default: only friends see your snaps. A Public Profile is different. It's an opt-in page that lets anyone discover and follow an account's public content.

Private accounts vs. Public Profiles

A standard Snapchat account is built for friends. Snaps and stories go to people you've added, and strangers can't browse what you post. A Public Profile adds a second, public layer on top of that account. It's designed for creators, businesses, public figures and organizations who want an audience beyond their friend list.

Having a Public Profile doesn't make everything public. Private snaps, chats and friends-only stories stay private. Only what the owner chooses to post publicly appears on the profile.

What a Public Profile can show

Who uses Public Profiles?

Public Profiles are common among musicians, athletes, influencers, news outlets, brands and space agencies. NASA, for example, uses its Public Profile to share mission updates, while creators use theirs to build a following and promote their work.

Subscribers aren't the same as friends

Subscribing to a Public Profile is a one-way follow. Subscribers see the account's public content, but they don't become friends, can't see private snaps and don't appear in the owner's friend list. That's what makes Public Profiles suitable for large audiences.

How to tell if an account has a Public Profile

Public Profiles have a public web page at snapchat.com/@username. If an account has one, you'll see a name, bio and often a subscriber count and highlights. If the account is private, the page shows little more than the username.

You can check any username with Social Viewer: enter it on the home page, and if the account has a Public Profile, you'll see its public details, story and highlights.
