Snapchat Stories, Highlights and Spotlight Explained

Published October 26, 2026 ยท Social Viewer

Snapchat has several ways to share content, and they behave differently. Knowing the difference helps you understand what you'll find on a Public Profile, and why some content disappears.

Stories: shared for 24 hours

A story is a series of snaps (photos or short videos) played in order. Stories disappear 24 hours after each snap is posted. On a private account, stories go to friends. On a Public Profile, the owner can post a public story that anyone can watch.

Because stories expire, an account's public story might have dozens of snaps one day and nothing the next. In Social Viewer, the live story appears first, with a colored ring, and the profile shows when the last story was posted.

Highlights: stories that stay

Highlights are past stories the owner has saved to their profile, usually grouped by theme, like "Behind the scenes" or "Tour 2026". They don't expire after 24 hours, so they're the best way to see what an account has shared over time.

On a Public Profile, highlights appear as a row of circles with titles. Each one can hold anything from a single snap to more than a hundred.

Spotlight: short videos for discovery

Spotlight is Snapchat's feed of short, entertaining videos, similar to other short-video platforms. Spotlight videos are designed to be discovered by people who don't follow the creator, and they can stay up long after posting. Social Viewer focuses on stories and highlights, so Spotlight videos aren't shown.

Quick comparison

Which should you check first?

Look at the story to see what an account is doing today, and at highlights for the content it's proudest of. Try it with a public account like @nasa.
